Investigation of Adult Fungus Gnat

The following micrographs record the dissection of an adult fungus gnat (species not yet established).

The sample was captured flying away from a sufferer with Morgellons Disease, who reports observing fungus gnats often, in multiple locations, not just in the home environment.

Antennae are segmented (approx 14). Thorax has a dark green hue in bright sun light. Sample is male.

The wings of a fungus gnat fold over it's back when not in flight. The wings have a distinctive 'Y' at the edge.

The following micrographs (above & below) are the contents of the fungus gnat (including hemolymph, black filament bundle, blue, red and transparent).

The micrograph on the right (above) shows two very fine filaments shooting off camera (right). These could be leg nerves. More investigation is required to understand which elements are anatomy and which, if any, are introduced.

Above micrograph of hemolymph ('blood') of fungus gnat containing red filament and short black filament.
