Raising awareness to the Public and Professionals about an emerging disease
Research Cases of Morgellons Disease are being reported from around the world. Some sufferers report having had symptoms for decades - since the 1980's, maybe earlier. Much of the research is centred in the USA. In January 2008, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) announced that it was carrying out an epidemelogical study into Morgellons. The study was conducted by Kaiser Permanente, a large health care provider in Northern California, in partnership with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). The study involved gathering information from over 100 sufferers and at least 50 of these have been examined and samples taken from them. The study findings are expected to be released in 2009. In the meantime, the CDC have written to all state health departments to make them aware of Morgellons, which is now listed on the US National Library of Medicine listing. Morgellons UK would like to see UK Universities and scientific centres allocate resources to join in with current research in the States. There are 17 published journal articles concerning Morgellons Disease. Research and theories could not be more varied, but are starting to converge in their observations.
